Pilates
and Weight Loss
If you are looking to lose weight only, then Pilates is not the
way to go. Even at an Intermediate Pilates level, it only burns
the same number of calories as less strenuous exercises such as
golf, dancing and badminton. At the Beginner level, calorie usage
is reduced to the same as gardening and walking. So, used in isolation,
Pilates is not the most efficient method of losing weight.
However, if Pilates is undertaken as part of a weight loss plan,
it can be beneficial for many reasons. Pilates:
Improves posture and body tone so you look
and feel slimmer
Strengthens muscles gently without high
impact exercise
Improves balance and coordination
Helps with relaxation and stress relief
Increases stamina without adding muscle
bulk
Is suitable for all ages and body shapes
and sizes
So, Pilates can help with weight loss as part of a weight loss
plan but is not recommended as an aid to weight loss only. Pilates
has so many other benefits that it should be seriously considered
if the aim is a healthy new lifestyle, which includes weight loss.
