Eggs
– Their Role In Diet And Health
Eggs have had a terrible press over the years – all of it undeserved.
First there was Edwina Curry scare mongering about eggs and the
dangers of salmonella. This was later discredited but quickly followed
by the eggs versus cholesterol debate.
Eggs are packed with lots of valuable nutrients and compounds such
as protein, riboflavin, zinc, folate, phosphorus, iron and vitamins
A, D, E and B12 yet contain only 70-90 calories. The Food Standards
Agency now states that there’s no limit to the number of eggs you
can eat per week as long as they are part of a healthy diet.
As mentioned in a previous article, eggs are excellent food to
eat for breakfast because they have a low glycaemic index. This
means they make you feel fuller for longer so that you eat less
in the long term.
